June 20 to 30, 2009 - Rabat
Moritz de Hadeln was invited to chair the international jury of the 15th “Rabat International Festival of Films d'Auteur”. The other members of the jury were Jawad Assadi (Irak), Tanvir Mokammel (Bangladesh), Layla Chaouni and Farid Belkahia (Morocco). Unanimously, the jury gave the award for the best film to the Russian director Yuri Mamin for his film “Don't think of the white monkeys”. Other prizes went to the Iraqi director Abbas Fadel for his film « The dawn of the World” and to the Swiss Ursula Meyer for her film “Home”. Unfortunately, the festival was rather disorganized and hardly visited by the local public. This regrettable situation was underlined by the jury in its statement, read on stage at the closing ceremony [jury statement].

Nevertheless, due to the economical situation, the event had to be shortened of one day at the last moment. The selection, cured by Andrey Plakhov was remarkably interesting even if it lacked any real discovery. The first prize was awarded to the Slovak film “Blind Loves” by Juraj Lehotsky, the second to the Argentine film “Lluvia (Rain)” by Paula Hernandez while the Russian film “Russia 88” by Pavel Bardin created quite a controversy in it's treatment of local neo-Nazi and hooligans and ended up by receiving a special jury award after heated discussions.

January 21 to 23, 2009 - Solothurn
Moritz and Erika attended this traditional winter showcase devoted to Swiss cinema., its informative value could not be underestimated. Swiss cinema is crossing difficult times, not that talent is missing in the country, but due to structural reasons last but not least the frequent disagreements on the role of the federal government in distributing its subsidies. The country being linguistically divided and hardly disposing of a large audience to cover production costs, co-productions and European help remain an unavoidable key to survival.
